Best AI Apps for the FAA Written (Knowledge) Test (2026)
AI apps for the FAA private pilot written test compared: free tiers, prices, AI tutors and test coverage, with every price checked on the vendor site Oct 20, 2026.
Checked October 20, 2026. The FAA knowledge test (most pilots call it "the written") is where AI study apps help the most. The question pool is large, the topics are dry, and memorizing letters doesn't stick. A good AI app explains why an answer is right, brings back the questions you miss, and tells you when you're ready to book the test. Below are the AI-assisted written-test apps we list, with free tiers and prices taken from each vendor's own website or US App Store listing on the date above (AviateIQ and check-ride.ai on October 19).
The test itself, from the FAA
The FAA Airman Knowledge Testing Matrix (September 25, 2026 edition) lists the Private Pilot Airplane (PAR) test at 60 scored questions in 2.0 hours with a 70% passing score. You may also see up to 5 unscored validation questions, and the 2 hours includes them. Instrument Rating Airplane (IRA) is 60 questions in 2.0 hours, and Commercial Pilot Airplane (CAX) is 100 questions in 2.5 hours, both at 70%. The FAA cut the PAR time from 150 to 120 minutes in April 2023. Some apps below still run a 2.5-hour mock exam, so set your own 2-hour timer.
After the test, your Airman Knowledge Test Report (AKTR) lists ACS codes for the areas you missed. Your instructor has to review those areas with you and endorse that before the checkride. GroundScholar lets you paste the report and drill exactly the codes you missed.

Which one fits you
- Spending nothing: PPL Free Ground School. The full private pilot course and unlimited mock exams are free, not a trial. Pair it with the free tiers of GroundScholar or Aviation Test Prep when you want a second set of explanations.
- Want the AI to show its source: Aviation Test Prep opens the FAA handbook page behind each answer, and GroundScholar cites the FAR, AIM or PHAK on every drill question.
- Hate subscriptions: GroundScholar's $49 Written Pass lasts until you pass and is refunded if you fail.
- Doing Private now and Instrument next: Aviation Test Prep (one exam at a time, switch anytime) or FlightAcademia.ai (PPL, IFR and Commercial in one plan, plus oral and radio practice).
- Studying on your phone: Aviation Test Prep and AviateIQ have iOS and Android apps; The Written installs from the browser.
A 3-week plan that uses AI well
- Week 1: learn, don't test. Work one topic a day (regulations, airspace, weather, performance, navigation, systems, aeromedical). After each block of questions, ask the AI "why" on everything you got right by guessing.
- Week 2: let the app pick. Switch to adaptive or spaced review so the questions you miss keep coming back. Do the figure-heavy questions (sectional charts, performance charts, weight and balance) with the FAA testing supplement figures, not from memory.
- Week 3: timed exams. Take full 60-question exams on a 2-hour timer. A sensible bar before booking: several scores of 85% or better in a row on questions you haven't seen.
- Check one citation a day. Look up one AI explanation in the PHAK, the FAR/AIM or the ACS. If an app gets it wrong, trust it less.
- Get your endorsement. Ask your CFI for the knowledge-test endorsement. Most apps here don't provide one.
What AI can't do for the written
None of these apps is FAA-approved training, and no prep company has the live FAA test questions. AI explanations can be confidently wrong, so the PHAK, the FAR/AIM and the ACS stay your references. A passed knowledge test is good for 24 calendar months, so plan to take the checkride inside that window, and use the AKTR codes as your first oral-prep list.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best free AI app for the private pilot written test?
As checked on October 20, 2026, PPL Free Ground School is the most complete free option: every lesson, 899 practice questions and unlimited mock exams cost nothing, and you get 3 free questions to its AI instructor (unlimited AI is a $99 one-time add-on). Aviation Test Prep gives 60 free questions with AI explanations, GroundScholar 5 cited drill questions a day, Rotate 10 quiz questions a day, and The Written 2 topics and 1 mock exam a month.
How long is the FAA private pilot written test in 2026?
The FAA Airman Knowledge Testing Matrix (September 25, 2026 edition) lists the Private Pilot Airplane (PAR) test at 60 scored questions, 2.0 hours and a 70% passing score. You may also see up to 5 unscored validation questions. The PAR time was cut from 2.5 hours to 2 hours in April 2023, so practice with a 2-hour timer even if an app's mock exam gives you longer.
Does an AI app give me the endorsement to take the knowledge test?
No. You need an endorsement from an authorized instructor who gave you the training or reviewed your home-study course (14 CFR 61.35). Some paid online ground schools include that endorsement, but the AI apps here generally don't, and PPL Free says plainly that it does not. Ask your CFI before you book the test.
Are the AI explanations accurate?
Usually, but not always. The better apps tie answers to FAA sources: Aviation Test Prep's tutor cites the handbook or regulation and opens the page, PPL Free answers only from cited study material, and GroundScholar cites the FAR, AIM or PHAK on every answer. Still check anything surprising against the PHAK, the FAR/AIM and the ACS, because an explanation can sound confident and be wrong.
Which apps cover the instrument and commercial written tests?
Aviation Test Prep covers Private, Instrument and Commercial (one exam at a time, switch anytime). FlightAcademia.ai covers PPL, IFR and Commercial written prep in its $29/mo plan, and PilotTrack covers PPL through CFI. PPL Free, The Written and GroundScholar's Written Pass are private pilot only.
Can I use ChatGPT instead of a test-prep app?
You can use it to explain a concept, but it doesn't have the FAA test figures, a timed 60-question exam or a record of your weak areas, and it can misquote regulations. A test-prep app with cited explanations is the safer core; see our guide to using ChatGPT for ground school.
