You can't drill it alone, and paid mock orals with a CFI add up. A new group of AI tools runs a conversational mock oral based on the FAA Airman Certification Standards (ACS): it asks a question, follows up on your answer, and grades you. Here is what's available and how they differ. Quick comparison Tool | Format | Certificates (as advertised) | Free option | Price | check-ride.ai (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/check-ride-ai) | Voice AI examiner, web | Multiple, tailored to your aircraft and airport | One full session | Paid sessions | HeyDPE (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/heydpe) | Voice or text, web | Private, Instrument and more | 3 exams / 7 days, no card | See site | MockDPE (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/mockdpe) | Web; scenarios from live METAR/TAF at real US airports | Private, Instrument, Commercial | One full session | See site | Checkride.bot (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/checkride-bot) | Voice-only, iPhone/iPad | Private, Instrument, Commercial, CFI | Area I free | 30-day passes, e.g. Instrument $49.99, CFI $79.99 | CheckrideReady (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/checkrideready) | Web | Private, Instrument, Commercial | Free to start | See site | Gleim Digital Pilot Examiner (Otto) (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/gleim-digital-pilot-examiner) | Talk or text | Private only | No free trial | Paid | Sporty's ChatDPE, ChatCFI & ChatFAR (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/sportys-chatdpe) | Inside Sporty's course | Private (Learn to Fly Course) | Only with the course | Course $299 lifetime | FlightKit (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/flightkit) | App + web | Private, Instrument | Free tier with daily AI limit | AI examiner on Pro, $159/yr | FlightAcademia.ai (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/flightacademia) | Web | PPL, IFR | 7-day trial, no card | See site | Prices and coverage come from each vendor's own site when we checked in October 2026 and change often. Check before you buy. How to choose - Voice matters. The real oral is spoken. Voice-first tools (check-ride.ai, Checkride.bot, HeyDPE) train you to answer out loud and in full sentences, which is a different skill from typing. - Match your certificate. Instrument applicants have the most choice. For the CFI, Checkride.bot is one of the few that advertises coverage. - Scenario realism. MockDPE builds questions from live weather at real airports, and check-ride.ai tailors to your aircraft and airport, so you rehearse the scenario-based questioning DPEs actually use. - Pass or subscription. Most people need an oral tool for a few weeks. Time-limited passes (Checkride.bot) often beat a subscription, unless the tool also does things you'll keep using, like a logbook or weather (FlightKit). How to get real value (and avoid bad habits) - Do a free session in two tools first. Twenty minutes in each tells you more than any review. - Treat every citation as a lead, not a fact. When the AI cites a regulation or AIM paragraph, look it up in the official source. AI-generated citations can be wrong. - Bring your aircraft documents. Systems and performance questions should be answered from your POH/AFM, not generic numbers. - Keep a weak-areas list and take it to your CFI for the mock oral and your ground lessons. - Practice saying "I don't know, but here's where I'd find it." Examiners expect it. An AI that rewards confident guessing is training the wrong reflex. Browse every tool in this category on our checkride prep comparison page. FAQ: Q: Can an AI examiner replace a mock oral with my CFI? A: No. AI examiners are useful for repetition and for finding weak ACS areas between lessons, but they can be wrong, and only your instructor can endorse you and only an examiner can pass you. Use them to prepare for the mock oral with your CFI, not instead of it. Q: Which AI checkride tools can I try for free? A: At the time of writing: check-ride.ai and MockDPE offer one full free session, HeyDPE offers three exams over seven days with no card, CheckrideReady is free to start, and Checkride.bot gives Area I free. Sporty's ChatDPE comes with the Learn to Fly Course, and Gleim states there is no free trial for its examiner. Q: Are any of these FAA approved? A: No. They present themselves as self-study or practice tools; Checkride.bot, for example, states that it is not an FAA-approved training program. Q: Which tools cover the instrument oral? A: MockDPE, CheckrideReady, HeyDPE, FlightKit and Checkride.bot all advertise instrument coverage. Gleim's Digital Pilot Examiner is private pilot only. ### How to Practice ATC Radio Calls with AI URL: https://cockpitindex.com/guides/how-to-practice-atc-radio-calls-with-ai Updated: 2026-10-17 For many student pilots, the radio feels harder than the flying. The fix is reps: saying the calls out loud until they're automatic. AI controllers make those reps available any time, at home, without tying up a frequency. Two ways AI trainers grade you - Fixed answer key. The correct call is pre-written from FAA references and your readback is checked against it. ATCpal (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/atcpal) describes its grading as a token-exact match against a fixed answer key written from the AIM and Pilot/Controller Glossary, and Comms (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/comms) says its scenarios use standard phraseology rather than AI-generated responses. The upside: results are reproducible. The downside: less freedom to phrase things differently. - Conversational controller. A language model plays the controller and reacts to whatever you say. Aviate AI (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/aviate-ai), Readback (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/readback) and TowerTalk (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/towertalk) work this way. It's more realistic, but the grading is a model's judgment, so check anything surprising against the AIM. Which tool for which job Need | Good fit | Notes (from vendor sites) | Structured course from zero | ATCpal (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/atcpal) | 201 lessons over 11 phases of flight; FAA, ICAO or Transport Canada phraseology. Free lesson; Pro $12.99/mo or $9.99/mo billed yearly. | Practice at your own airport | TowerTalk (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/towertalk), Aviate AI (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/aviate-ai) | TowerTalk uses real US airports with today's METAR and nearby ADS-B traffic, and quotes the AIM paragraph behind each correction. Aviate AI uses real US airport diagrams and frequencies. | Quick drills on iPhone | WilcoAI (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/wilcoai), Abeam (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/abeam) | WilcoAI: push-to-talk drills scored on correctness, clarity and speed. Abeam: 195 scenarios plus daily quizzes. | Pay per use | Readback (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/readback) | $0.025 per call, or $49/yr for 10,000 calls. | Free taster | Comms (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/comms) | 3 free scenarios; iPhone, iPad and Android. | Europe / UK | Learn ATC (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/learn-atc), TowerTalk (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/towertalk) | Learn ATC targets German BZF/AZF radio licences. TowerTalk offers a UK CAP 413 mode. | Flight-sim pilots | SayIntentions.AI (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/sayintentions) | AI ATC inside MSFS and X-Plane. | A 15-minute practice routine - Pick one phase you'll fly next lesson: taxi, pattern, flight following or a Class C arrival. - Write the expected calls on a kneeboard card first (who you're calling, who you are, where you are, what you want). - Do 10 reps out loud with push-to-talk, so you practice keying the mic and speaking at radio pace. - Read the feedback, especially missed readback items like runway, hold-short instructions, altitudes, headings and frequencies. - Repeat the failed calls until they're clean, then fly the same calls with your CFI. Safety: AI controllers are training aids, not ATC. In the airplane, the real controller and the AIM are the authority, and when in doubt, ask ATC to "say again." See all radio trainers on our ATC and radio practice comparison page. FAQ: Q: Can I really practice ATC calls with AI? A: Yes. Apps like ATCpal, TowerTalk, WilcoAI, Readback, Comms, Aviate AI and PlaneEnglish ARSim let you speak a call out loud to an AI controller and get feedback on your phraseology and readbacks. Q: Is an AI controller a real ATC service? A: No. These are training aids only. Nothing an AI trainer says is a clearance, and frequencies, weather and traffic in them are for training. Q: Do I need a flight simulator? A: No. Most run on a phone or in a browser with just a microphone. SayIntentions is the exception: it adds AI ATC to MSFS and X-Plane. Q: What about transcribing real ATC in flight? A: That is a different category. Apps such as Clearance AI and ATC Whisper transcribe ATC on-device in the cockpit as an advisory aid. They never replace listening to and reading back the controller. ### Can ChatGPT Answer FAR/AIM Questions? What Pilots Should Know URL: https://cockpitindex.com/guides/can-chatgpt-answer-far-aim-questions Updated: 2026-10-17 Short answer: a general chatbot can be a good explainer and a poor authority. It can explain the idea behind a rule in plain English. It can also invent a paragraph number, mix up Part 61 and Part 91, or describe a rule that has since changed, all in the same confident tone. Even an aviation AI vendor, PilotGPT (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/pilotgpt), says on its site that general-purpose LLMs can hallucinate and aren't reliable for aviation use. Why general chatbots trip up on regulations - The exact wording matters. Regulations turn on specific words ("within the preceding 90 days," "in the same category, class and type"). A paraphrase can quietly change the meaning. - Rules and the AIM change. The AIM is revised periodically (for example, AIM Change 3 took effect July 9, 2026). A model's training data may predate the change. - Citations can be fabricated. A plausible-looking "§ 61.xx(y)" is not proof the paragraph says that, or exists. How to use AI for FAR/AIM questions safely - Ask for the citation (part, section and paragraph) every time. - Open the official text: 14 CFR on eCFR, and the AIM on faa.gov. Read the paragraph yourself. - Check definitions in 14 CFR Part 1 when a term matters. - For edge cases, look for FAA Chief Counsel legal interpretations, and ask your CFI. - Never use a chatbot answer as your only basis for a go/no-go, currency or legality decision. AI tools built for regulation questions Purpose-built tools narrow the risk by answering from a defined document set and citing it: - RegBrief (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/regbrief): offline FAR/AIM search on iOS plus cited cloud Q&A. Pro is $5.99/mo or $39.99/yr. - AeroCopilot ChatFAR (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/aerocopilot-chatfar): a 14 CFR chat mode that cites the binding regulation and explains it in plain English. - Aviator Intelligence (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/aviator-intelligence): answers grounded in ASA publications, with citations and page references. - Sporty's ChatDPE, ChatCFI & ChatFAR (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/sportys-chatdpe): Sporty's ChatFAR explains regulations with practical scenarios, inside Sporty's course. - Arien Aviation (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/arien-aviation) and Glide AI (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/glide-ai): assistants that search FAA publications (and, for Arien, your own documents) with sources. If you already use ForeFlight, the ForeFlight AI Connector (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/foreflight-ai-connector) lets ChatGPT or Claude pull your ForeFlight data (briefings, performance, logbook). That makes answers more personal, but the same verify-the-source rule applies. Not legal advice. AI tools are study and reference aids; the official regulation text, your CFI and the FAA are the authorities. Compare every tool on our FAR/AIM Q&A page. FAQ: Q: Can I rely on ChatGPT for FAR questions? A: Use it as a starting point only. General-purpose chatbots can produce confident, wrong or outdated answers. Always read the cited regulation in the official text before relying on it. Q: Where is the official, current text of the FARs? A: The eCFR (ecfr.gov) publishes the current text of 14 CFR, the Federal Aviation Regulations. The AIM is published by the FAA on faa.gov. Q: Are there AI tools built specifically for FAR/AIM questions? A: Yes. Tools such as RegBrief, AeroCopilot ChatFAR, Aviator Intelligence (built on ASA content) and Sporty's ChatFAR are designed to answer with citations to the regulation or source page. Q: Is an AI answer legal advice? A: No. For a genuinely ambiguous situation, read the regulation, check FAA Chief Counsel legal interpretations, and ask your CFI or an aviation attorney. ### AI Tools for Student Pilots: A Starter Kit URL: https://cockpitindex.com/guides/ai-tools-for-student-pilots Updated: 2026-10-17 You don't need a dozen subscriptions. Pick one tool for what you're working on right now, use the free tier hard, and add the next tool when you reach the next stage. Here's a stage-by-stage kit. 1. Knowledge (written) test The Private Pilot Airplane (PAR) knowledge test is 60 multiple-choice questions in 2.5 hours, and 70% passes. AI helps most by explaining why an answer is right, so you learn the concept instead of memorizing letters. - The Written (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/the-written): spaced repetition, timed mock exams and AI explanations. Free to start. - Rotate (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/rotate): 3,500+ questions, mock exams and an AI tutor for follow-ups. - FlightAcademia.ai (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/flightacademia): adaptive PPL/IFR prep, plus oral and radio practice, with a 7-day free trial. - flyCowboys (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/flycowboys) and Aviio AI (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/aviio-ai): adaptive drills, flashcards and AI study help. 2. The radio Start radio practice early, because it takes a lot of reps before calls feel automatic. ATCpal (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/atcpal) has a free lesson and a structured course, TowerTalk (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/towertalk) lets you practice at your home airport with today's weather, and WilcoAI (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/wilcoai) is quick to use on iPhone. Read our guide: How to practice ATC radio calls with AI. 3. Regulations and "why" questions Use a citing tool such as RegBrief (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/regbrief) or Aviator Intelligence (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/aviator-intelligence), and read the cited paragraph. Our guide Can ChatGPT answer FAR/AIM questions? explains the pitfalls. 4. Weather and go/no-go practice Decoding METARs and TAFs is a core student skill. Tools like SkyBrief (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/skybrief) and FlightKit (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/flightkit) translate weather into plain English and compare it with personal minimums. SkyBrief says its go/caution/no-go verdict comes from a rule-based engine, so the same weather always gives the same answer. Use them to check your own decoding, not to replace it. Neither is an official briefing. 5. Logbook and progress If your school uses FlightSense (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/flightsense) or Sky Schedule (https://cockpitindex.com/tool/sky-schedule), you may already get AI-written debrief summaries. Read them, but your CFI's debrief and endorsements are what count. 6. Checkride prep In the last few weeks, add an AI mock oral. See Best AI apps for checkride oral prep for a side-by-side comparison of free trials and pricing. A sensible budget Many of these tools have free tiers or trials (ATCpal, TowerTalk, The Written, Comms, CheckrideReady, MockDPE, HeyDPE). Stack free tiers early, and pay for one tool at a time when you hit its limit. Safety: AI tools are supplements. They can be wrong, and none are FAA-approved training. Your CFI, the FAA handbooks (PHAK, AFH), the regulations and your aircraft's POH are the authorities. FAQ: Q: What AI tool should a new student pilot start with? A: Start with what you're studying now. Usually that's knowledge-test prep (for example The Written, Rotate or FlightAcademia.ai) plus an ATC radio trainer (for example ATCpal or TowerTalk), since both have free tiers. Q: How long is the FAA private pilot knowledge test? A: The Private Pilot Airplane (PAR) knowledge test has 60 multiple-choice questions, a 2.5-hour time limit, and a passing score of 70%. Q: Can AI replace ground school or my CFI? A: No. AI tools are supplements. Your CFI provides the required training and endorsements, and official FAA handbooks and regulations are the reference. Q: Are AI weather briefs legal preflight briefings? A: No. Apps that summarize weather are supplemental. Get an official briefing and make your own go/no-go decision.
