AI Flight Planning Apps for GA Pilots (2026): AvNav, FlightKit, Xega
AI flight planning apps for GA pilots compared: AvNav, FlightKit, AeroSense AI, Xega, Fly Overhead, AviaPilot and ForeFlight AI Connector, with prices.
Checked October 21, 2026. Flight planning is where AI pilot apps are moving fastest. Some are full electronic flight bags with an AI layer, some sit next to your EFB and do the briefing, fuel and performance work, and a few let you plan by chatting or talking as you would to a dispatcher. Below are the AI flight planning tools we list, with what the AI part does and what each costs, taken from each vendor's own site on the date above.
What you still have to plan yourself
- Preflight action. 14 CFR 91.103 requires the pilot in command to "become familiar with all available information concerning that flight." For IFR flights and flights away from the airport vicinity, that includes weather reports and forecasts, fuel requirements, alternatives if the flight can't be completed, and known ATC delays. For every flight it includes runway lengths and takeoff and landing distance data.
- VFR fuel. 14 CFR 91.151: enough fuel, considering wind and forecast weather, to reach the first point of intended landing and then fly at least 30 more minutes by day or 45 minutes at night at normal cruising speed (20 minutes for rotorcraft).
- IFR fuel. 14 CFR 91.167 adds the alternate when one is required, then 45 minutes at normal cruising speed.
An AI planner can draft all of this quickly. Checking it is still your job.

Which one fits you
- You want one app for planning and flying: AvNav or Fly Overhead. Both are full EFBs with AI built in, and both have a free way to try them.
- You already fly with ForeFlight: keep it, try the ForeFlight AI Connector while it's in preview, and add FlightKit or AeroSense AI only if you want go/no-go briefings and performance math they do better for you.
- Student pilot planning your first cross-countries: plan by hand first, then compare your nav log and fuel numbers with FlightKit or AeroSense AI's free tier. Differences are good questions for your CFI.
- Mountain, terrain or long VFR routes: Xega Flight's solver is built around airspace, terrain and fuel stops together.
- You'd rather plan by talking: AviaPilot and FlightDepartment.ai work like a dispatcher you chat with. FlightDepartment.ai is still a beta and calls itself advisory only.
How to use an AI flight planner safely
- Check the route on a current chart. Look for airspace, terrain, obstacles and TFRs along the line the app drew.
- Run your own fuel numbers. Use your aircraft's real fuel burn and the 91.151 or 91.167 reserve, and land with more than the legal minimum.
- Use your POH for performance. Confirm takeoff and landing distances and weight and balance for the actual load, temperature and runway.
- Get the full weather and NOTAM picture from an official source or your EFB, not only the AI summary. See AI NOTAM apps compared.
- Re-plan when things change. A plan made last night won't reflect this morning's TAF or a new TFR.

Safety: AI flight planning tools are aids, not an official briefing or an approved flight plan. As pilot in command, you are responsible for the route, fuel, performance and weather decisions.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI flight planning app?
It depends on whether you want a full EFB or a planning assistant. AvNav (CoPilot $149.99/yr founders price, 30-day trial) and Fly Overhead (EFB Basic $7.99/mo, Pro $13.99/mo) are full EFBs with AI features built in. FlightKit (free tier, Pilot $99/yr) and AeroSense AI (free plan, Pilot $20/mo) add go/no-go briefings and performance math around whatever EFB you fly with. If you already pay for ForeFlight, its AI Connector lets you ask ChatGPT or Claude about your own flights. Prices checked October 21, 2026.
Can AI plan a VFR cross-country for me?
Several apps will draft a route, altitudes, fuel stops and a briefing for you, and Xega's planner solves airspace, terrain, fuel and wind together. Treat the result as a first draft: check the route on a current sectional, confirm the airspace and terrain clearances, run the fuel and weight-and-balance numbers for your aircraft, and get a complete weather and NOTAM briefing. You are still the pilot in command under 14 CFR 91.103.
Is there a free AI flight planning app?
Yes, with limits. AeroSense AI's free plan includes 3 AI flight briefs a month, FlightKit's free tier covers weather, charts and the airport directory (the go/no-go and performance tools are on the $99/yr Pilot plan), AvNav's Explorer plan is free for ground use and evaluation, Fly Overhead's live tracker is free, and Xega's chart is free with a 30-day trial of Xega Pilot.
Does an AI flight plan meet the FAA preflight requirements?
No app can meet them for you. 14 CFR 91.103 requires the pilot in command to become familiar with all available information, including weather, fuel requirements, alternatives, runway lengths and takeoff and landing distances. AI apps can collect and summarize that information, but you have to check it. FlightKit says plainly that it is a supplemental planning aid, not an official briefing.
Can ChatGPT or Claude plan a flight?
On their own, general chatbots don't have live weather, NOTAMs or your aircraft's performance data, so they shouldn't plan a flight. The ForeFlight AI Connector (Open Preview for active individual ForeFlight plans) connects your ForeFlight account to ChatGPT or Claude so they can answer questions about your own briefings, performance and logbook. Aviation-specific apps such as AviaPilot ground their answers in live FAA data.
