AI Pilot Logbook Apps: What They Automate and What You Still Sign
Compare AI logbook apps that draft entries from ADS-B and GPS tracks, scan paper logbooks or analyze your flights, plus what 14 CFR 61.51 still requires of you.
Logging is the chore nobody learns to fly for. AI now takes on a lot of it: drafting entries from your track, reading old paper pages and spotting patterns in your training. You still own the record, though, and the rules haven't changed.
Four things AI does in logbooks
- Drafts entries from flight data: ADS-B, GPS tracks or your EFB's track log.
- Scans paper logbooks and turns handwritten pages into digital entries.
- Analyzes your flying by matching flights to ACS tasks, flagging plateaus and writing debrief summaries.
- Answers questions about aircraft maintenance records for owners.
Compared
| Tool | Best for | AI feature (as advertised) | Price (as listed) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pilot IQ | Student pilots and CFIs | Reads uploaded flight tracks, matches the ACS tasks flown, attaches the CFI debrief and lists your 3 weakest areas | Free logging and 3 analyses; then $2.99 each or 5 for $7.99; free for CFIs |
| AFE Logbook | Students at connected schools | Auto-logs flights from connected schools and rebuilds entries from GPX/KML tracks | See site |
| Fly Overhead | GA pilots who want an EFB too | ADS-B-drafted logbook entries and 3D debriefs | See site |
| FLYLOG.io | Pilots moving from paper, airline and GA | AI paper-logbook scanner, plus ADS-B/ACARS autofill | First 50 flights free; plans from $3.99/mo |
| Jetlog | Airline pilots on iPhone | ADS-B time autofill and AI scanning of old logbooks | 3 months free, then €2.99/mo or €29.99/yr |
| HUD SONiC | Airline career pilots | Combines ADS-B, schedule and aircraft data to complete entries | Free |
| Kryvox, Sky Schedule | Flight schools | AI-drafted debrief summaries and logbook transcriptions for a person to approve | School software |
| AircraftMX ChatMX, LogAir.ai | Aircraft owners and buyers | Plain-English questions about maintenance records, with cited answers | ChatMX: 30-day free trial |
Prices and features come from each vendor's site in October 2026 and change often. Jetlog and HUD SONiC are built mainly for airline pilots.
What you still own
- What must be logged. Under 14 CFR 61.51, you must log the training time and aeronautical experience you use toward a certificate, rating or flight review, and the experience that shows your recent flight currency.
- Accuracy. Check every AI-drafted entry, especially night time, night full-stop landings (61.57(b)) and instrument approaches (61.57(c)). A track can't tell an approach flown under the hood from a visual.
- Signatures and endorsements. Your instructor signs your training entries and endorsements. For electronic signatures, see FAA Advisory Circular 120-78A.
- Your data. Export a backup regularly (CSV or PDF), and check whether you can take your data with you if you switch apps.
Not every automatic logbook uses AI. ForeFlight's logbook, for example, creates draft entries from recorded track logs. The rule is the same either way: review before you save.
How student pilots should use these
- Pick one logbook and log every lesson the same day, while you still remember it.
- Use the AI debrief or analysis to prepare questions for your CFI, not to replace their debrief.
- Before each stage check and the checkride, have your CFI review your totals against the experience requirements.

Not legal advice. You are responsible for the accuracy of your logbook. Check FAA guidance or ask your CFI when in doubt.

Frequently asked questions
Are electronic pilot logbooks legal?
Yes. The FAA accepts electronic logbooks, and Advisory Circular 120-78A gives guidance on electronic signatures and records. Whatever you use, you must be able to present your logbook when the FAA or another authorized official asks for it.
Can AI fill in my logbook automatically?
Several apps draft entries from ADS-B or GPS track data, including Jetlog, HUD SONiC, AFE Logbook and Fly Overhead. Treat each entry as a draft. Check times, night time, landings and approaches before you save it.
Can AI digitize my old paper logbook?
Yes. FLYLOG.io has an AI paper scanner, and Jetlog includes 10 AI scans with its subscription (then €8.49 per 50). Review every extracted entry, and keep the paper originals, which still carry the instructor signatures.
What about aircraft maintenance logbooks?
Tools such as AircraftMX ChatMX and LogAir.ai let owners ask plain-English questions about scanned maintenance records and get answers that cite the source pages. They help with research and pre-buy review, but they do not replace your A&P or IA.
