AI Tools for Flight Instructors (CFIs) in 2026
AI tools for CFIs compared: debrief writers, lesson-plan generators, student trackers and CFI-checkride prep, with which are free for instructors (checked Oct 20, 2026).
Checked October 20, 2026. Most AI aviation apps are built for student pilots, but a growing group is built for the person in the right seat. They draft debriefs from a voice memo, show which students are slipping before they quit, write lesson plans with citations, and help CFI candidates get through the FOI, FIA and the practical test. Below are the instructor-side tools we list, with what's free for CFIs and what students pay, taken from each vendor's own site or US App Store listing on the date above (Checkride.bot and CheckrideReady on October 19).
The short list
| Tool | What it does for a CFI | Cost to the instructor | What students or schools pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| VectoredOps | Record a voice debrief after the flight; AI turns it into a structured debrief, a study plan and flashcards, and flags at-risk students | Free, unlimited students, no card | $79/mo plus $79 setup, $790/yr or $997 lifetime |
| Atlas | Write and sign ACS-linked debriefs the student keeps; per-student weak areas; next-lesson focus; AI study partner cited to handbooks, regs and the ACS | Free U.S. beta: up to 4 students, 30 hosted AI requests a month (automatic AI debrief drafting not included) | Free during the beta |
| Pilot IQ | Roster of every student's hours, ACS progress and currency; reviews solo tracks with the student's flight analysis | Free for instructors | Logging free with 3 analyses, then $2.99 each or 5 for $7.99 |
| Aviator Intelligence by ASA | Generates ACS-aligned lesson plans, oral Q&A and quizzes, citing ASA books and the 2026 FAR/AIM | 7-day free trial, then $19.99/mo or $99.99/yr | Same app, same price |
| AeroCopilot | Pro plan adds a school dashboard, student progress and CFI cohort analytics on top of its AI briefings | Free through its CFI Program (apply in your account) | Student $9.99/mo; Pilot $17.99/mo; Pro $29.99/mo |
| PilotTrack | AI ground school (PPL through CFI) you can point students to; AI CFI and AI DPE mock orals | Free for CFIs | $299/yr; Module 1 of every rating free |
| CheckrideReady | Instructor portal: link students, see their oral-prep progress and assign specific ACS codes to study | Not stated on the site | From $19.99/mo; 7-day free trial |
| FlightSense | School platform: voice or typed debriefs become AI summaries with predicted ACS tasks; FITS grading; "Amelia" assistant reads each student's record | Through your school | School pricing (not published) |
| Sky Schedule | Training records where the Arlo assistant writes a debrief from your notes, step grades and the ADS-B track | Through your school | School software |
| Kryvox | School software that drafts daily ops briefs and debrief summaries; a person accepts or rejects every draft | Through your school | School software |
Prices are in US dollars and change often, so check the vendor's page before you sign up. Cockpit Index has no affiliate deals with any of these tools.
Which one fits you
- Independent CFI, a handful of students, no budget: start with Atlas or Pilot IQ for debriefs and progress, both free to you. VectoredOps is free to you too, but your students pay for it, so be sure they want it before you recommend it.
- You hate writing debriefs: a voice-to-debrief tool (VectoredOps, or FlightSense if your school runs it) saves the most time. Talk for two minutes in the parking lot, then edit the draft.
- Ground school and lesson plans: Aviator Intelligence by ASA gives you a cited outline you can adapt; build the actual lesson around your syllabus and the ACS.
- Chief instructor or school owner: look at the school platforms (FlightSense, Sky Schedule, Kryvox) or AeroCopilot's Pro dashboard, which roll progress up across instructors.
- Want your students to study between lessons: point them to the free tiers in our student pilot starter kit and use CheckrideReady's portal to assign ACS codes before the checkride.
Working toward your CFI?
The FAA Airman Knowledge Testing Matrix (September 25, 2026 edition) lists Fundamentals of Instructing (FOI) at 50 questions in 1.5 hours and Flight Instructor Airplane (FIA) at 100 questions in 2.5 hours, both with a 70% passing score. Tools that cover CFI-level study:
- PilotTrack: AI ground school with a CFI track, AI CFI and AI DPE mock orals ($299/yr for all ratings).
- Aviator Intelligence by ASA: quizzes and oral Q&A at CFI level, plus lesson-plan drafts you'll need for the practical test.
- Checkride.bot: voice AI oral graded against the standards, with a 30-day non-renewing CFI pass for $79.99 (checked October 19).
Write your own lesson plans for the practical test. An examiner will notice a generated plan you can't teach from, so use AI drafts as a starting point and make every plan yours.
What stays your job
- Signatures and records. Under 14 CFR 61.189 you must sign the logbook of each person you give flight or ground training, keep a record of every solo, knowledge-test and practical-test endorsement you give (with test results), and keep those records for at least 3 years. An app can store them; it can't sign them.
- Endorsement wording. Tools can draft endorsements from FAA Advisory Circular 61-65, but check the wording against the current AC before you sign.
- The debrief itself. AI summaries can miss what mattered, or invent what didn't happen. Read and edit every draft before your student sees it.
- Student privacy. Ask before you record a lesson or upload a student's records, and read the vendor's privacy policy. Keep names out of general chatbots.

Frequently asked questions
Which AI tools are free for flight instructors?
As checked on October 20, 2026: VectoredOps is free for instructors with unlimited students (students pay), Pilot IQ gives CFIs a free roster view (students log free and buy flight analyses), PilotTrack is free for CFIs, AeroCopilot has a free CFI Program you apply for, and Atlas is a free U.S. beta for up to 4 students per instructor.
Can AI write my lesson debriefs?
Several tools draft them for you. VectoredOps and FlightSense turn a recorded voice debrief into a structured summary, and Sky Schedule's Arlo assistant writes one from your notes, grades and the ADS-B track. Kryvox drafts debrief summaries for a person to accept or reject. In every case you review, edit and sign it; the debrief is your instruction, not the software's.
Can AI sign endorsements or logbook entries?
No. Under 14 CFR 61.189 the flight instructor must sign the logbook of each person given flight or ground training and keep records of solo, knowledge-test and practical-test endorsements for at least 3 years. An app can draft the wording from AC 61-65, but you sign it and you're responsible for it.
Is there an AI tool that writes CFI lesson plans?
Aviator Intelligence by ASA generates ACS-aligned lesson plans, oral Q&A sessions and quizzes on request, citing ASA-published books and the 2026 FAR/AIM ($19.99/mo or $99.99/yr after a 7-day trial). ChatGPT can draft one too, but without citations, so check every reference.
How do I prepare for the CFI knowledge tests with AI?
The FAA Airman Knowledge Testing Matrix (September 25, 2026) lists Fundamentals of Instructing (FOI) at 50 questions in 1.5 hours and Flight Instructor Airplane (FIA) at 100 questions in 2.5 hours, both at 70%. PilotTrack covers the CFI rating, Aviator Intelligence builds CFI-level quizzes, and Checkride.bot sells a 30-day CFI oral pass for $79.99.
Is it OK to put student information into these apps?
Read each vendor's privacy policy first and ask your students, or your school, before uploading names, recordings or training records. School platforms such as FlightSense and Kryvox keep records inside the school's account; for a general chatbot, leave names out.
