Updated 2026-10-21 · Facts and prices checked against vendor sites

Checked October 21, 2026. NOTAMs are where an otherwise good briefing goes wrong. They are written in ICAO contractions, mixed in with routine notices, and there can be dozens for one airport. A new group of AI apps translates them into plain English, ranks them by how much they matter, or filters them to your runway and time. Below are the AI NOTAM tools we list, with what each does and what it costs, taken from each vendor's own site or US App Store listing on the date above.

What the FAA expects from you

An AI decoder helps you read all of that faster. It doesn't change what you have to read.

How to use an AI NOTAM decoder safely

  1. Get the complete set first from your EFB, Flight Service or the FAA's NOTAM Search, then use the AI to read it.
  2. Keep the raw text next to the summary. Check the times (UTC), runway numbers and the words CLSD, U/S and UNREL yourself.
  3. Check TFRs separately on tfr.faa.gov and in your briefing. A missed TFR is the costliest omission.
  4. Don't stop at the airports. Look at the ARTCC and FDC NOTAMs along the route, and GPS NOTAMs if you plan an RNAV approach.
  5. Refresh before you go. A summary from last night won't show a NOTAM issued this morning.

Safety: AI NOTAM tools are reading aids, not an official briefing. As pilot in command, you are responsible for knowing every NOTAM that affects your flight.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI NOTAM decoder?

If you already pay for ForeFlight, ClearNOTAMs is built in: it translates every FAA and ICAO NOTAM into plain English with the original one tap away (a limited-time preview on individual plans, then a Premium feature). Without ForeFlight, Notamify (free basic plan, Pro $24.9/mo) filters NOTAMs to your flight, and SmartNOTAM (2 free searches a day, Pro $9.90/mo) ranks them by severity and paints closures on the airport diagram. Prices checked October 21, 2026.

Are AI NOTAM summaries legal to use for my preflight?

Nothing in 14 CFR 91.103 says where your information must come from, but it requires the pilot in command to become familiar with all available information concerning the flight, and the AIM (5-1-3) says that includes NOTAMs. An AI summary is a reading aid. Keep the original NOTAM text in front of you and get a complete briefing from an official source or your EFB.

Can an AI app miss a NOTAM?

Yes. A summary can drop a notice, misread a contraction or get a time window wrong, and it looks just as confident either way. That's why the better apps keep the raw text one tap away (ClearNOTAMs has a "Show Source" button and a way to report errors). Check TFRs separately on tfr.faa.gov and in your briefing.

Is there a free AI NOTAM app?

Several have free tiers: Notamify's basic plan includes airport NOTAMs with AI interpretations, SmartNOTAM gives 2 free NOTAM searches a day with plain-English summaries, AI Notams allows 3 briefing PDFs a month, and Solus Copilot's free core pulls FAA NOTAMs into its pre-departure brief. Glide AI's free tier answers 5 questions an hour; its global NOTAM engine is a Pro feature.

Which NOTAMs do pilots most often miss?

The AIM (5-1-3) reminds pilots to check NOTAMs for the ARTCC area they will fly through, not just the departure and destination airports. Those cover things like special use airspace, temporary flight restrictions, GPS outages and Flight Data Center (FDC) route changes. It also says to get updated destination information from ATC or Flight Service en route.

Is there an AI NOTAM app for airline pilots?

AI Notams is built for airline crews: share the NOTAM briefing PDF from your EFB and it removes repeated and irrelevant notices, groups the rest by airport and highlights runway, ILS, closed and unserviceable items, all processed on the device. It supports Iberia and several other airline briefing formats. Notamify also offers an airline product and an API.
